SHOE & BOOT WATERPROOFING: CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROTECTION
Western Oregon's wet weather can be hard on shoes and boots. At High Street Shoe Repair in Salem, we waterproof and condition many kinds of footwear and help customers choose products based on the leather, the construction of the shoe, and how much rain or outdoor exposure it will see. Waterproofing can improve water resistance and help protect leather, but no topical treatment can make every shoe completely waterproof.
Before treating footwear, it is also worth checking the condition of the soles and seams. If water is entering through worn tread, cracked sole material, loose stitching, or a separating sole edge, the shoe may need repair first. AROUND TOWN / LIGHT-DUTY WATER PROTECTION
For everyday shoes and boots that see normal rain, Cadillac Shield Rain and Stain Protector is a useful first-line treatment. We generally recommend an even first coat, an hour or so to dry, and then a second coat before wearing. On smooth leather, a cream polish or an appropriate leather conditioner can be used afterward when additional conditioning is wanted.
WORK BOOTS & HEAVIER WEATHER
Smooth leather work boots and outdoor boots may benefit from a heavier water-repellent treatment. Lincoln Silicone Water Repellant is one option we use; because it has a strong odor, it should be applied with good ventilation. Cadillac Shield is a better choice when odor is a concern.
Another option is Montana Pitch Blend Leather Dressing. It is a paste-style leather dressing that we have found is long-lasting and practical for work boots and many other smooth leather shoes. For customers who want both conditioning and water resistance in one product, it is often a good choice.
If the soles themselves are worn out, waterproofing alone will not solve the problem. We also offer specialized resoling for footwear such as Dr. Martens boots and Blundstone boots, along with many other shoe and boot repairs.
SUEDE & NUBUCK
Suede and nubuck need a treatment made for delicate, textured leather. We use Cadillac Shield Rain and Stain Protector because it can add water and stain resistance without coating the surface with a heavy paste or oil. Even after treatment, fine suede and nubuck footwear is generally better suited to occasional wet weather than prolonged exposure to heavy rain.
WHEN WATERPROOFING IS NOT ENOUGH
Waterproofing works best when the shoe or boot is structurally sound. If you see sole separation, deep cracks, worn-through tread, or other damage, repairing the footwear first usually gives the best result. Can leather shoes and boots be waterproofed?
Yes. Smooth leather can usually be treated to improve water resistance. The best product depends on the type of leather, the footwear construction, and how much wet-weather use it will see.
Can suede and nubuck be waterproofed?
They can be treated with an appropriate rain and stain protector. Because suede and nubuck are more delicate than smooth leather, we still recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to severe wet weather when possible.
Does waterproofing make shoes completely waterproof?
No topical treatment can guarantee that every shoe becomes completely waterproof. Seams, stitching, worn soles, cracks, and the basic construction of the footwear can still allow water to enter.
Should worn boots be repaired before waterproofing?
Often, yes. If moisture is entering through a worn or separating sole, damaged stitching, or cracked material, repairing that problem is usually more important than adding another waterproofing treatment.
